When Sara Dawson is given an assignment to write about a mother she never knew, she turns in a blank sheet of paper. It is no surprise that her teacher gives her a low grade, so Sara decides to go find a mother. She will not be happy with just any mother, it must be one who is “kind, friendly, a good cook and loves my Dad with all her heart.”

Sara soon learns that her task is much harder than what she imagined. Just finding the first three items on her list proves to be difficult and finding them in a woman who is interested in a readymade family is nearly impossible.

When Sara finds Ellen Stephens, she believes it is a match made in heaven, but Ellen is more interested in pursuing her own match made in heaven than marriage to Sara’s father, a man who is too busy for romance. Before it is all said and done, there are lessons to be learned about the guiding hand of providence. For two of the cast of characters, one of those lessons is about how fleeting the life of a loved one can be.
